Ignored for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ticket from the Fatehgarh Sahib seat, sitting Sirhind MLA Didar Singh Bhatti resigned from the party on Sunday.
Bhatti announced that he would contest against party candidate Prem Singh Chandumajra. The MLA is likely to join the People's Party of Punjab.
The decision to allot the SAD ticket to Justice Nirmal Singh (retd) from Bassi Pathana (reserved) and district party president Jagdeep Singh Cheema from Amloh has also received the thumbs down from local leaders.
Bibi Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal, former member of Parliament, told HT, "Nirmal Singh is an outsider. He has got the ticket because he is the husband of sitting MP Paramjit Kaur Gulshan. I will convey the resentment of SAD supporters to the party president and the chief minister." However, she ruled out the possibility of her resignation from the party.
Supporters of Youth Development Board chairman Gurpreet Singh Raju Khanna are also upset at the allotment of ticket to Cheema, son of SGPC member and former PWD minister Randhir Singh Cheema.
