The Global Village will be open for 59 days from December 13 to February 9, 2007, while the shopping festival kicks off on December 20.

MP Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) managing director Ashwini Lohani told Hindustan Times that the event is a great opportunity for the State to showcase its tourism potential and cultural heritage to the world. “The theme of the Indian Pavilion this time is the architectural landmarks of Madhya Pradesh including the Gwalior Fort and Khajuraho temples,” he said.

Madhya Pradesh has booked 25 stalls at the Pavilion, which showcases a rich collection of handicrafts from across the country besides providing a platform for cultural events. The State has taken Rs 50-lakh package of 10 stalls and booked an additional 15 stalls for about Rs 1.25 lakh each. Artisans from far and wide including Rewa, Chanderi, Satna, Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain, Budhni, Shivpuri, Dindori, Chhattarpur, Sehore, Sidhi, Tikamgarh, and Maheshwar are taking part in the event.

In it’s 12th year at the Global Village, the Indian pavilion has got better with every passing year. The biggest highlight of the pavilion is a variety of handicrafts and exquisite artefacts available at various outlets. Special ceramic art, tribal art, wood art, tribal paintings and beadwork from different parts of Madhya Pradesh would be on display.

A wide collection of Kashmiri shawls, Rajasthani shoes, antiques, mud pots, jewellery, trendy textiles and garments, traditional puppets, etc, will be on display from other parts of the country.

The Village will play host to about 40 pavilions from across the world and also feature varied cuisine at over 50 restaurants.

Apart from the rich mix of cultural and heritage products, the pavilion offers a gigantic stage for entertainment programmes. Several cultural events have been lined up at this huge makeshift theatre.

The Indian pavilion has received accolades from visitors of all nationalities. It has won a string of awards from the Global Village management in the past including Best Pavilion Award 1999, 2002 and 2005, Best Global Day Awards 2005 and Best Folkloric Activity Award 2003.

Considering that DSF 2006-07 is falling during Christmas and New Year, the Dubai tourism department is expecting close to one lakh Indians at the shopping extravaganza. With more than 3000 participating retail outlets and more than 40 shopping malls, offering huge discounts, prizes and raffle draws, DSF 2006-07 promises to be the ultimate shopping experience.
