PRAVIN MAHAJAN had decided to kill his brother a month ago. Since then, he had been constantly trying to get a chance to meet Pramod Mahajan and carry out the plan.
Pravin revealed his "decision to kill" Pramod during his interrogations by the Worli police. Police Commissioner A.N. Roy confirmed this. "He had decided to kill him around a month ago and was looking for an opportunity to shoot him," he told HT.
Asked if Pravin expressed any remorse or enquired about his brother who is battling for life at Hinduja Hospital, Roy said, "Pravin has clearly stated that he wanted to kill his brother and had shot only to kill. He has shown no indication of any remorse till now."
Some police interrogators said Pravin showed no signs of being mentally disturbed either. On the contrary, he appeared to be absolutely cool, coherent and logical when replying to questions.
"Even the personal assistants of my brother have struck riches over the years," Pravin is said to have told his interrogators, according to sources. "They're all crorepatis due to the contracts and other incentives they get due to my brother's largesse.
But he never showed the same largesse to me, which could have made me rich as well." Pravin is said to be nursing a deep sense of inferiority complex vis-à-vis his "high profile, bada aadmi" elder brother and hurt that the latter did not do anything to get him "big construction contracts".
Sources said Pravin was trying constantly to "get a chance" to meet Pramod but met with no luck. The BJP leader used to be out of the city often. Also, he was "extremely angry and disappointed" with Pravin because of his "increased alcoholism" and had not wanted to meet him.
On Friday, Pramod arrived in the city, from Nagpur. On Friday night, according to some of his police interrogators, Pravin told his wife, Sarangi that he would leave at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday to meet his brother. "I'll not wake you up then, that'll disturb you and the kids," he said.
On Saturday, Pravin left in his car at 5.30 a.m. and arrived at Pramod's Worli residence two hours later (the police want to find out why he took so long). Around 7.30 a.m., when he met his brother, Pramod kept reading newspapers and paid him no attention.
"Pravin says this really infuriated him and he shot at him thrice," said a source. Roy told HT: "After this, Pravin coolly took the staircase from the 15th floor flat and came down. Nobody noticed him. He took a cab and first went to surrender at the Worli traffic police office at Pochkhanwala Street but was asked to go to the Worli police station that lies only a few metres away. He paid Rs 20 to the cabbie."
