Known as 'Mr Clean' of Meghalaya politics, the former Chief Minister Salseng C Marak is one of the most respected political leaders of the state.
However, he has gone down in the history of Meghalaya politics for a negative reason too. He holds the record of heading a government for the shotest period of 12 days in the state in 1998. The record was previously held by BB Lyngdoh when he headed a regional party coalition for just 30 days in the state before it was ousted in 1988.
At present the Meghalaya state Congress chief, Marak is at the forefront of the Congress campaign in the state, keeping the focus fixed on 'corruption and stability, the issues he has been championing for years in pulic life. He is at present an MLA from Resubelpara constituency.
Marak is also one of the most vocal politicians openly opposing the the militant-politician nexus and maintains that it may affect Congress policies and principles.
He almost brought down the current NCP-led coalition Government of FA Khonglam in December 2002 on the issue of granting licence for running a lottery but abandoned the idea on the advice of senior party leaders in view of prevailing political situation in the state.
He became state CM on March 10, 1998 but could continue for just 12 days when his Congress-led coalition resigned paving way for United Parliamentary Forum leader BB Lyngdoh to become next CM.
