Street food fiesta
Enjoy street food from different parts of the country under one roof at a food festival that opens today in the Capital
Fancy restaurants might attract people with their exotic cuisine and hip ambience, but foodies across the country have a soft corner for streetside food. And since Delhiites like to gorge on such gastronomic treats, the city is going to play host to a three-day street food festival, starting today.
Organised by the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) at Constitution Club, the festival will see more than 200 street food delicacies from over 20 states. The orgainsers hope to pull in many city people to the event, which offers street food from the south, the northern states, the north east, and the central west provinces. For example, the food mela will feature dishes such as mushroom tikka, imarti and rabri from the state of Punjab, as well as puttu kutti, cheratta puttu and tomato chutney from Kerala.
The festival would also have a voting system, which would select the best street food vendor. The winner would be awarded on the concluding day of the festival. Besides, the Food Safety and Standards Authority would also award the food vendors as per hygiene criteria. The food extravaganza will also feature magic shows, folk dance and music, and interactive sessions for children.
Through the festival, NASVI national coordinator Arbind Singh wants Indian street food to compete in the World Street Food Festival and be the best there as well. “Street food advocacy is gaining momentum in many countries. India should not lag behind. In June, Singapore Tourism will organise a World Street Food Congress and we would participate in that with the best street food vendors from India,” he says.
