The Kesarbagh Railway Overbridge (RoB) in Indore was inaugurated by a union minister recently after eight long years though the construction of service lanes on either sides of the bridge is yet to take off. So is the fate of four other bridges in the city. Hindustan Times does a status check.

The state’s first eight-lane railway over bridge in Super Corridor is pending for more than four years, while a flyover at Teen Imli junction, which collapsed under construction a year ago, is hanging in the lurch.

Similarly, there’s no news about the fate of the expansion of four-lane Railway over Bridge in Banganga and the second lane of Karbala Bridge near collectorate.

Teen Imli Flyover

Initial clearance for construction of a 700-metre six-lane bridge at Teen Imli square on Eastern Ring Road was given in February 2011. A year later, in March 2012, the state government cleared financial decks for the project. Finally, the project took off in February 2013 and was slated to be finished by February 2015.

But in March 2014, an accident led to collapse of the bridge, which added to the delay. ‘It was a human error, which led to the collapse,” claimed a committee set up to probe the accident.

“Clearances of funds, availability of construction site are major hindrances for timely completion of the project,” said RN Mishra, an executive engineer of public works department.

The Teen Imli square is a busiest junction for heavy vehicles passing round the clock, and this frequent vehicular movement near construction site also adds to delay, Mishra said.

One side of the bridge was opened for traffic recently and given the pace at which works are going on the project. It might easily take another six months for completion.

Railway Over Bridge at Super Corridor

Construction of the 880-meter eight-lane RoB project started in May 2012 and was scheduled to complete by June 2014. But due to poor inter-departmental coordination, the bridge is delayed by more than 18 months. The railway department not handing over the drawings to contractors rendered the bridge hanging in lurch for more than a year.

The works have now resumed, and the Indore Development Authority (IDA) hopes to complete the bridge before commencement of Simhastha in April 2016.

Banganga Railway over Bridge

Six-laning of flyover in Banganga has hit roadblock midway as a few establishments such as a police station and some encroachments are falling on way. Works are completely stalled now and can not resume until the roadblocks are cleared.

Karbala Bridge

Recently city mayor Malini Gaud inaugurated one lane of the 50-meter bridge for traffic. The works for building the second lane has not started yet.
