Hospital sources told HT the face of the party in Bhangar who was lionised by ministers such as Partha Chatterjee, Madan Mitra, Firhad Hakim a few days ago, spent Saturday in the hospital virtually abandoned by the leaders who seemed to have distanced themselves from him after his arrest on January 17.

Arbaul has been charged with at least a dozen sections of IPC, Arms Act and Explosives Act.

This correspondent managed to enter the ICCU on Saturday afternoon despite tight security and strong restrictions preventing movement of visitors in the unit. Four policemen including two armed personnel were posted at the gate of ICCU. Arabul was seen sleeping on bed no 7.

Several life-saving equipment including a cardiac monitor and a infusion pump fixed beside his bed were keeping watch on his heart condition round-the-clock.

His bed was seen covered with long brown colour curtains from all sides, while most patients lying on other cots were not fully covered.

A doctor prevented this correspondent from attempting to talk to the former MLA. The doctor said, “No one is allowed to visit the patient in the ICCU. We did not allow the patient’s (Arabul) wife and other relatives to meet him today.”

Incidentally, the former Trinamool MLA from Bhangar reportedly vented his frustration on Friday that he has now been abandoned by his own party.

On Friday after he complained of chest pain, Arabul was initially removed to M R Bangur Hospital, but then after problems persisted, police shifted him to SSKM hospital that has better facilities.

Doctors told HT Arabul’s condition was stable with low heart rate and hypokinesia, showing symptoms of reduced movement of muscle in the interior wall of heart.

Cardiologists led by Dr Saidul Islam, associate professor of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) as well SSKM, said that the patient has several cardiac syndromes with previous history of hypertension and diabetes.

On Saturday he underwent several such tests as ECG, Echocardiography, trop-T and pathological tests. Doctors have given normal fat free diet mainly soups.

“Doctors have attended the patient time to time. His condition is stable. His blood sugar (random) is little high while heart rate is around 54.

I have spoken to Islam who has recommended us to form a three-member medical board comprising cardiologist, endocrinologist and general medicine expert. He may discharged within three days following the advice of the board,” Dr T K Ghosh, superintendent of SSKM hospital, said.

Adequate security arrangement has been beefed up in front of the ICCU since he was brought to the hospital.
