In focus: A guide to making great movies about the movies

Indian films and TV shows about the movie industry should focus on human drama, offer a glimpse into the past, and go beyond the surface to explore deeper themes, according to experts. While authenticity is not crucial, the story should shine through, as in the 2023 series "Jubilee," which looks at a prominent film studio set in India's 1940s. "Luck By Chance" and "Rangeela" depict the struggles of actors, while "Bombay Talkies" illustrates how movies are part of life in India. "The Dirty Picture" delves into mental health issues triggered by the cut-throat entertainment industry, and "Supermen Of Malegaon" portrays a town where residents shoot slapdash remakes of popular Bollywood films on a shoestring budget.

When turning the spotlight on the entertainment world, don’t let the facts get in the way of the truth. Jubilee (2023) is set in the late 1940s, even though the protagonist based on Himanshu Rai died in 1940.
