Congress candidate Ajay Kumar Dubey had polled just 52,268 votes from Bokaro in 2014. Dubey received marginally higher number of votes at 57,980 from Dhanbad.

In total, Singh had received 5,43,491 votes, registering a thumping victory over Dubey, who received 2,50,537 votes.

With the highest number of voters and polling booths in a single assembly segment in Dhanbad, Bokaro is expected to play a crucial role this time as well. Barring some suburban pockets, most of the population is divided between the Bokaro township and Chas municipal corporation areas.

The Dhanbad assembly segment has 4,07,275 voters, Sindri has 3,05,102 voters, Nirsa has 2,99,255 voters , Jharia has 2,89,151 voters and Chandankiyari has 2,33,034 voters.

Senior BJP leader Milton Parthsarthi said, the party is focusing on all pockets including Bokaro. “PN Singh has visited Bokaro on several occasions and is meeting people there to ensure that he fetches maximum votes from there. An action plan has been chalked out in cooperation with party leaders including Bokaro BJP MLA Biranchi Naraian,” he said.

“We are working day and night for the party candidate. This time PN Singh would fetch much higher votes from the Dhanbad assembly segment than he did 2014,” said Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha.

As the segment is crucial for Congress too, the party is leaving no stone unturned to maximise its votes from Bokaro. Congress is banking on INTUC, the party’s labour wing, which has a good hold over Bokaro steel plant workers. “We hope to fare well from this assembly segment this time,” said Congress president BP Singh.
