Controversy over Jilani’s US visit
Controversy seems to have engulfed the ten-day US visit of additional advocate general (AAG) Zafaryab Jilani.
Jilani left for the US on Thursday on the invitation of Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), a US based organisation mainly comprising of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumni. But before Jilani could land on US soil, many Aligs (AMU alumni) have issued a boycott call to all these programmes scheduled between June 14 and June 22.
Jilani, an AMU old boy and member AMU court, would participate in a series of seminars highlighting the ‘persecution of Muslims in India’ being organised in five US cities, including Washington DC.
In an email to Ammar Husain, the US-based organiser, P Mohammad, a 2003 batch AMU passout, has appealed to all Aligs attending the event to show Jilani black flags in protest against the cold blooded custodial murder of terror accused Khalid Mujahid and failure of the Samajwadi Party government intackling communal riots in Uttar Pradesh.
Like Mohammad, a number of Aligs are not happy with the ‘silence’ of Jilani over the death of Mujahid.
“People like Zafaryab Jilani have failed to get any legitimacy in UP and now he is desperate to garner his support in US on the line of Narendra Modi of Gujarat. This is very much condemnable,” added the email. He had demanded that Jilani would be welcomed in US only if he resigned from the post of AAG and completely disassociated himself from Samajwadi Party government.
