The fake pathology labs were being run for years, illegally using the names and registration numbers of two women doctors posted as lecturers at the medical college’s department of pathology, they added.

The police lodged an FIR on the basis of a complaint by the BRD Medical College authorities, senior superintendent of police Shalabh Mathur said.

An MBBS student, said to be the mastermind behind the scam, charged 40,000 for each such document. Both the MBBS student and a hospital clerk, also allegedly involved in the scam, went underground following media reports on the issue and subsequent registration of the FIR, they said.

The SSP said the case was lodged under sections 379 (punishment for theft), 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) , 420 ( punishment for cheating and dishonesty) of the Indian Penal Code against unidentified persons.

“The SP north is investigating the matter. Action will be taken against whosoever is found involved in the case,” he said.

When asked if it was possible to charge 40,000 for photocopies of degrees and if the same could be used to run medical establishments, the SSP said as of now he could not contradict media reports on the claim and added that things will be clear only after the probe was over.

After registration of the case, the pathology owners were on the run and a manhunt was launched for them, station house officer, Gulharia, Jaideep said.

The BRD Medical College is no stranger to controversy. Last year, the death of 30 children in 48 hours, allegedly due to disruption of oxygen supply over non-payment of suppliers’ bills, shook the nation.

The matter concerning the theft of documents came to light on Thursday when a patient reached the BRD Medical College pathology lab with her earlier medical reports issued from a private lab running in the Gorakhnath area of the city.

The BRD Medical College doctors were shocked to find the private lab report carrying the name, ‘fake signatures’ and registration number of a woman doctor posted as lecturer at the medical college.

They brought the matter to the notice of the lecturer who said she did not know how her name and registration number were used to operate the lab. She, in turn, alerted medical college principal Ganesh Kumar.

When asked, the principal refused to divulge details and said: “The police are probing the incident and will take action against the guilty.”

A doctor, who refused to be named, raised suspicion that the scam may involve crores of rupees and claimed that documents and degrees of over 50 doctors at the college may have been stolen and sold to ‘mischievous people’ in Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Sant Kabirnagar, Deoria and Basti at very high rates for running poly clinics, pathology labs and for private practice.
