A woman police constable with the Vile Parle police station was allegedly slapped and kicked by a motorist, who she caught for riding without a helmet on Tuesday morning.
The police also arrested the brother of the accused for getting to the spot and abusing the police. Both were produced before a magistrate’s court in Andheri and remanded in police custody for a day. The Vile Parle police said the incident took place around 10.30am, when a team of five, including two women constables from the Vile Parle police station, were posted at Subhash crossroad as part of a routine drive against riders not wearing helmets.
The accused, Aarti Patlekar, 27, was caught for riding her Activa without a helmet and refusing to pay the fine of Rs500. The police said Patlekar asked why they were catching her, when it was the traffic police’s job. When an official tried to explain, a heated argument ensued between Patlekar and the woman constable, Priyanka Khot. Khot alleged Patlekar slapped and kicked her and that she had to be taken to VN Desai hospital. Soon after the incident, Patlekar called her brother Sudharshan, who reached the spot and started abusing the other personnel posted there.
Senior police inspector Raksha Maharao of Vile Parle police station confirmed the developments.
An FIR was registered against both of them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act.
