Double-decker BEST bus hits overhead bar in Mumbai; roof crushed
A spokesperson of the BEST said the bus was defective and two mechanics were transporting it to Kurla depot from Marol depot when the accident occurred around 1.05am.
The upper roof of an empty double-decker BEST bus was crushed after it ran into an overhead gantry bar at the Western Express Highway (WEH), near Vakola bridge, in the early hours of Thursday. Though no one was injured, three rows of seats along with front portion of the upper deck of the bus were also badly damaged.

The overhead gantry bar was installed on the road to regulate the height of vehicles passing under it.
A spokesperson of the BEST said the bus was defective and two mechanics were transporting it to Kurla depot from Marol depot when the accident occurred around 1.05am.
Anand Vibhute, the mechanic driving the bus, was arrested by the Vakola police on Thursday for negligent and rash driving under sections 279 and 427 (damage to property) of the Indian Penal Code. “He was later released on bail,” said Kailash Awhad, senior police inspector, Vakola police station.
According to BEST officials, regular bus drivers are aware of the overhead gantry bar and they usually avoid taking the route. “The mechanics may have been unaware about the bar, but it was their negligence,” said an official.
This is the second such incident on that road in the past year. On July 3, 2018, a double-decker bus hit the overhead bar, badly damaging the roof.
The BEST administration claimed they had taken enough precautions after the previous incident and warned drivers to avoid taking the service road. “After last year’s accident, a line circular (internal circular for drivers and conductors on the route). In the wake of a fresh accident, the circular will be revised,” said the spokesperson.
There have been multiple cases of damage to double-decker bus roofs in the past.
