The police have identified the two accused as Aayub Yusuf Khan, 42, and Chotesingh Vijaysingh Yadav, 55, who are residents of Girgaum and Khetwadi respectively.

The police said that the gang would stop at tourist locations with three cards, which they would place on a sheet of paper on the floor. Following this, the gang would approach foreigners. They would pressurise them to bet on the cards.

An officer from Azad Maidan police station said, “One person would show the victims a card under with a number is written. The gang would ask the victims to bet on the card which possess the number, and then dupe them with their skill.”

He further said, “The gang would not let the victims leave. When the victims would insist on leaving, the gang would beat them and rob them of cash and valuables.”

On Monday, the police got a tip-off that the gang was operating in Bombay Gymkhana. They sent a police constable to them, who posed as a customer.

“Our constable started playing the game, and later after losing, when he wanted to leave, the gang stopped him and insisted on placing another bet, following which they robbed him of cash. In the meanwhile, we laid a trap around the spot and nabbed two of them,” said an officer.

However, during the raid, the other two accused, Krishna and Vinod, managed to escape.

The two arrested accused have been booked under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 392 (punishment for robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were produced in court and have been remanded to police custody.
