In Mumbai: Elder brother arrested for abetting Sakinaka man’s suicide
Mangesh Anerao left behind a suicide note alleging he took the extreme step owing to pressure and harassment by his family members
The Sakinaka police on Sunday registered a case of suicide abetment and arrested the elder brother of Mangesh Anerao, 40, who killed himself on Saturday morning after poisoning his three daughters.
According to Sakinaka police, Mangesh’s wife, Mathura, 30, has filed a FIR against his elder brother, Narendra, 46, Narendra’s wife,Sarika, and father, Rajaram, under section 306 and 34 of the IPC for abetment of suicide and crime committed with common intention.
Mangesh left behind a suicide note alleging he took the extreme step owing to pressure and harassment by his family members who wanted to sell the house in which all of them were staying together. If his father would have sold the house, Mangesh and his family of six would have become homeless.
The police said he was involved in a fight over property with his father and brother. The police said Mangesh’s problems had increased even more as he was not taking up a job and remained unemployed for a long period. Further, he had got addicted to liquor. The Sakinaka police arrested Narendra, while his wife and son are named as wanted in the case. On Sunday, Narendra was produced before a magistrate’s court and was remanded in police custody till November 17 for further probe.
Narendra’s lawyer tried to argue before the magistrate that he was living separately for a couple of years and has not abetted the suicide. But the magistrate quickly responded that police custody will have to be granted. The defence argued for a short police custody of a couple of days, but the Sakinaka police asked for maximum police custody and the magistrate obliged with four days custody.
The police have registered a separate FIR against Mangesh for murdering his children and will close the case by filing an abated summary report in court informing them that he is dead.
Mangesh lived with his wife and four children —seven-year-old son Ameya, a four-year-old daughter Harshita and one-year-old twin daughters Ananya and Arohi — in Mohali village in Sakinaka.
The Sakinaka police said Anerao asked Madhura and Ameya to get money from an acquaintance in Virar at 6.30am on Saturday. He had even called Madhura’s sister to their house the previous night so she could accompany them. In the suicide note, Anerao said he poisoned his daughters as he did not want to leave them behind. He wrote he could not get himself to kill his son and wife.
