The Mumbai police on Tuesday took over the case against singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya who allegedly abused a Delhi-based journalist on Twitter.
Swati Chaturvedi had on Sunday filed a complaint against the controversial singer for passing ‘abusive and obscene comments’ on the site.
A Mumbai police officer confirmed the development to HT. “We have informed the complainant in writing that we have taken over the case from the Delhi police. We will take help from the cyber cell to collect evidence against the singer. We will also call him to record his statement.” The FIR was registered on Sunday against the Bollywood singer in Delhi .
Chaturvedi got into a row with Abhijeet on the micro-blogging site when the latter said the murder of Infosys employee S Swathi,24, was result of ‘love Jihad’. Many Twitter users, including Chaturvedi , criticised Abhijeet for giving out false information and stoking communal hatred, and demanded police action. In return, he branded the journalist as ‘anti-national’ after which she lodged a complaint with the Delhi police.
The woman journalist, thereafter, tagged Mumbai police on Twitter demanding action against him for spreading lies about her. The Mumbai police wrote back to her asking her to lodge a formal complaint with the local police.
Earlier too, the singer has found himself in the soup when he compared people sleeping on roads to ‘dogs’ and defended Salman Khan in the hit-and-run case.
