Mumbai records most road mishaps in Maharashtra; fatalities witness 20% dip

However, the city witnessed a 20% drop in road fatalities compared to the same period last year, revealed state-wide road accident data.

Across Mumbai, 99 people were killed and 769 got injured in road accidents between January and March 2019. Across the state, 434 people died and 3,434 others got injured in the same period.

According to RTO officers, there is hardly any significant drop in road deaths in the state when compared to 2018.

A total of 13,261 people died and more than 31,000 others were injured in 35,717 road accidents through the whole of last year.

Data with the road safety cell revealed that in two dozen districts and cities of Maharashtra, the number of fatalities has increased compared to the previous year’s first quarter.

With an increase of 39 fatalities, Satara district tops the list. It witnessed the highest — 91% — increase in road deaths, followed by Aurangabad City and Latur district at 83% and 62% respectively.

JB Patil, who is heading the road safety cell and holds the additional charge of joint transport commissioner of the state, said they have already asked the RTO officers concerned to take corrective steps, where there is a rise in the number of road fatalities.

“They have been asked to conduct road safety drives, besides taking other necessary steps through district road safety committees,” he said.

In Mumbai, the number of fatalities went down by 24. The highest drop in road accident fatalities was recorded in Pune city.

Fifty six fewer deaths occurred in Pune city, which amounts to a 49% drop in fatalities.

Even in Thane city, fatalities went down by 42%, meaning 37 fewer deaths compared to last year. Navi Mumbai also witnessed a slight drop in fatalities.
