Several shoppers who saved a few bucks by illegally parking their cars outside High Street Phoenix mall at Mumbai’s Lower Parel lost their valuables to a bunch of thieves. The NM Joshi police busted the racket and arrested two men, who allegedly broke car windows to steal gadgets and other valuables. Shahrukh Upadhyay alias Raju, 28, and Babban Abdulla Khan alias Akhtar , 24, are from Prabhadevi and Santacruz. The police have recovered four laptops from them and are searching for a third accused, who is said to be the mastermind.

Owing to ‘high’ parking charges in the mall, visitors halted their cars on Senapati Bapat Marg, which left them vulnerable to break-ins especially at night, said the police.

An officer from NM Joshi police station said, “People park their cars outside and there is no one to keep a vigil. The gang would walk around the area at night and look inside the cars. If they found any bags or valuables worth breaking the glass, they would smash windows and flee with valuables.”
