Preeti Rathi acid attack case: Killer to be sentenced today

On Wednesday the prosecution had sought capital punishment for convict Ankur Panwar

The special women ‘s court will pronounce the sentence in the Preeti Rathi (23) acid attack case today. On Wednesday, describing the act as gruesome, merciless and pre-planned, the prosecution had sought capital punishment for convict Ankur Panwar, 25.

Special judge AS Shende on Tuesday had found Panwar guilty of Rathi’s murder and also for hurting others after he threw sulphuric acid on Rathi in May 2013. The court on Wednesday heard both sides and will pronounce the quantum of sentence on Thursday afternoon.

Panwar has been convicted of murdering Rathi, who died of multiple organ failure in June 2013. He had thrown acid on Rathi on May 2, 2013, at Bandra terminus after she arrived from Delhi. Rathi had come to Mumbai, accompanied by her father and aunt, and was supposed to resume duty at INHS Asvini Hospital in Colaba as a lieutenant (nursing). It was her first visit to the city. Panwar attacked Rathi as she ahd declined his marriage proposal .
