The special court set up under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act, 2012, concluded the case in just three months, with judge SD Tulankar convicting Ramesh Rajput, 35, who had molested a four-year-old student on her school bus on January 15, for penetrative sexual assault.

Rajput had sexually abused the kindergarten student of a premier Juhu school while she was being dropped home. The girl later told her father about the incident, who alerted the school the next day, after which she was taken for a medical test. The school took Rajput and the female bus attendant to the police on January 17, when Rajput was arrested.

The Juhu police filed the charge sheet, which included charges under section 11 and 12 (sexual harassment) of the new Act, in March, and the trial began in May. The prosecution examined seven witnesses and several documents related to the girl’s medical reports.

Sources revealed the fearless testimony of the victim before the court proved crucial in proving Rajput’s guilt.
