Four persons died when the Maruti Alto car they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck at the Yamuna Expressway around 8am on Monday. Police said visibility was normal at the time and speculated that the accident could have occurred due to over speeding.
“There was very little fog on Monday and visibility was normal. The driver may have dozed off or might have been driving the car at a high speed,” said Ajay Kumar, circle officer 2, Greater Noida.
The accident occurred seven km before Zero Point under Ecotech 1 police station’s jurisdiction. Police said the victims were returning after attending a wedding in Bihar and had left Agra on Monday morning after a night halt.
“The victims were identified as Sultan Ahmad (40), Manoj Kumar (53), Usha (73) and Soni Sinha (50),” said Kumar.
Ahmad was a resident of Jamia Nagar in Delhi while the others were residents of Niti Khand 1 in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, police said.
“The bodies were sent for a post-mortem exam, reports of which are awaited. The accident’s impact was such that it took 15-20 minutes to retrieve the bodies from the mangled car,” said Kumar.
Police have not registered any case yet as the victims’ families have not filed a complaint. Police said the truck the car collided with had broken down and had stopped on the roadside for repairs.
“We are investigating the matter. If anyone is found at fault, legal action will be initiated,” said Kumar.
Ahmad worked as Manoj’s driver. Manoj’s wife Soni and her mother Usha were also killed in the accident. The three had gone to Bihar with their driver a week ago, leaving their two children at home.
Manoj, an engineer, worked as a deputy general manager at a construction firm. His elder son Utkarsh Sinha, (17) completed his class 12 this year while the daughter Akriti Sinha (15) studies in Class 10 at a private school in Delhi.
Their neighbour, Ashish Gupta, said he got a call from Sinha’s sister around 8.30 am informing him about the accident. “She only told me that there had been an accident and asked me to come to Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida with the children. We were not told about the deaths and only got to know about them on reaching the hospital. The children are in shock,” said Gupta.
According to the neighbours, they were unaware when the family left for the wedding.
“The family would always visit Bihar together. This must be the first time that they left their children home. The whole colony is in mourning and everyone is concerned as to who will take care of the children now that their parents are gone,” said Rashmi Singh, another neighbour.
