Dr Satyam Arora, assistant professor, blood transfusion department, said necessary equipment such as apheresis machine, component fractionation machine, platelet incubator and agitator, semi automatic blood grouping and cross matching equipment has reached the hospital.

Apheresis is a procedure that involves removing all the blood from a donor or patient and separating it into individual components so that one particular component can be removed, Dr Arora said. The remaining blood components then are reintroduced into the blood stream of the patient or donor.

“It will be the only government-run hospital in the district to make the component available 24x7,” he said. The hospital, where nearly 600 patients get treatment daily, has 20 functional departments with four operation theatres.

Hopeful that the blood bank will be operational from mid August, he said, “We are expecting the authorities for inspection by the first week of August. We should be able to start the blood bank in second or third week of August”.
