Sangeeta Devi, a resident of Sector 86, was admitted to Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Multispeciality Hospital in Sector 30 on Monday morning after she went into labour.

Her family said she underwent two pregnancy-related ultrasound examinations in the hospital that suggested she was carrying twins. He said the ultrasound report from SJM Super Specialty Hospital in Sector 63 in April also indicated that she was expecting twins.

“As the previous ultrasound conducted on her in this hospital showed that she was carrying twins, she had to undergo an ultrasound again on Monday morning to rule out any complications. Monday’s ultrasound also showed the presence of twins in the womb,” her brother-in-law Mukesh Kumar said.

“She was taken to the operation theatre for surgery. Around 1pm we were told that she has delivered only one child,” Kumar added.

He said that electricity went off thrice during the surgery and they were asked to arrange blood for the operation. He alleged that the hospital staff took away the other child during the surgery.

The family refused to take the girl child unless they were given the other child. They also lodged a police complaint in the matter.

Chief medical superintendent (CMS) of the district hospital Dr NM Mathur, however, said that the family is refusing to accept the baby as it is a girl.

“We explained to them that there is the least possibility of a newborn being stolen from the operation theatre as eight to 10 persons, including doctors, were present there. But they are not ready to listen,” he said.

The CMS added that said there could a possibility of human error because of excessive workload.

“It requires nearly 20 minutes to finish an ultrasound test if done properly. Over 80 ultrasounds are done in our hospital daily. There is a possibility that the ultrasound report was made on the basis of the previous report that showed twins in the womb,” the doctor said.

Dr Mathur said Sangeeta’s family has not registered any complaint with him.

“However, I have reported the matter to the chief medical officer, district magistrate and police. I will order a departmental inquiry on Tuesday,” he said.
