The discom officials will scrutinize the information and the documents submitted by the applicant and submit their report with the application form in a week to higher officials. After getting approval from the higher ups, the applicant will be given an electricity connection, officials said.

Residents can start applying for power connections online from May 1. The portal will also provide information on the status of the application, officials said.

The launch was delayed as Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), the discom, in its trials, had been encountering some problems in setting up the facility.

For getting a new connection, an applicant will have to log on to the official website of the power corporation, www.uppclonine.com and submit the details sought. The applicant will also have the facility of making online payment for getting the new connection.

The applicant will also be able to track the status of his/her application online by entering relevant details.

Officials said that the facility will be available to all types of consumers in urban as well as rural areas — for domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural categories — with prepaid and postpaid payment facilities. As on March 31, there were 2,59,316 (urban and rural) domestic consumers in the district, 25,774 consumers having commercial connections and 9,541 industrial consumers registered with PVVNL.

At present, those seeking power connections have to visit the discom office and there have been allegations of arm-twisting by unscrupulous officials of the power department by many consumers.

Mukul Singhal, superintending engineer, Gautam Budh Nagar, said,”The online facility for getting an electricity connection will be a great relief to consumers. This will also bring transparency in the system.”
