Nine operation theatres are getting ready to facilitate surgery of internal organs, eyes, ears, nose throat, limbs, heart disorders, urology and cosmetic surgery. They are expected to be operational by June-end.

Come July, the super specialty child hospital and post graduate institute (SSCHPGI) in Sector 30 will have a full-fledged facility to operate on children suffering from various disorders.

Nine operation theatres are getting ready to facilitate surgery of internal organs, eyes, ears, nose throat, limbs, heart disorders, urology and cosmetic surgery. They are expected to be operational by June-end.

As of now, the child hospital gets over 300 patients every day in its outpatient department. While over 200 beds are functional in the hospital, hardly 50 of them remain occupied in the absence of operation theatres. “Four to five surgeries are performed every day in the lone major operation theatre (OT). There is also a minor OT in the hospital to take care of minor surgeries,” said Niharshi Srivastava, public relations officer, SSCHPGI.

Noida authority has built the hospital with a residential campus at an estimated cost of around 701 crore. While the admission facility in the child hospital started on April 1, 2016, it could not be utilised fully as the operation theatres could not be made functional.

As of now, there is one major operation theatre (OT) running in the casualty and one minor OT. As Noida authority had left the civil work and air-conditioning job halfway, the nine OTs could not be made functional in the last one year.

Noida authority chief executive officer Amit Mohan Prasad said the remaining work on the OTs has started. “Work is on and it will be finished by June 30,” he said.

The nine OTs will be used for performing paediatric surgery (on internal organs), cardiac surgery, orthopaedics, urology, eye, ENT, plastic surgery, obstetrics, etc.

SSCHPGI medical superintendent Dr Shekhar Yadav confirmed that work is in progress. “We will start work on providing the necessary infrastructure for running the OT as soon as the air-conditioning and finishing work on the OT are over,” he said.

Dr Yadav said this is the only super specialty child hospital in north India. “It is a super specialty hospital with research facilities. It will prove to be a boon for child patients from various parts of Uttar Pradesh and the national capital region, particularly from poor families. Once it becomes fully functional, it will not be easy to get admission there,” he said.

SSCHPGI executive registrar Dr Dinesh Kumar said the work on providing medical paraphernalia in the OTs will be carried out simultaneously. “We have purchased all medical equipment required for running an OT. Operation table, oxygen cylinder and all instruments are with us and as soon as they make an OT ready, we will put everything in place,” said the doctor, who is also associated with the purchase of equipment in the hospital.

The hospital has also started facilities for outpatient department and admission.

The departments of paediatric surgery, medicine, neurology, neonatology, gastroenterology, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, radiology, psychology, dental surgery and physiotherapy have already been made functional.

The institute, which started providing admission facility over a year ago, has remained largely underutilized. Despite having high-end facilities, the super specialty child hospital, set up at a cost of 701 crore, has remained largely underutilised.
