The financial and administrative mess that followed the arrest of erstwhile Badminton Association of India (BAI) president, VK Verma, has been hurting the players financially as they are yet to receive prize money for international tournaments for the last two years.
Till not so long back, the BAI also owed a substantial sum to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), as prize money for international events conducted in the country has to be deposited with the world body.
Though most of the Indian players have kept quiet, the matter came to the fore when two-time Tata International Challenge winner Yunus Alamsyah of Indonesia brought the issue to the notice of the organisers, the Prakash Padukone Academy.
BAI officials admitted there was a problem since the accounts were not submitted to them during the change of guard.
"When we came to know about the extent of the problem, we first paid off the BWF and will soon disburse the money among players," BAI vice-president (administration) TPS Puri told Hindustan Times.
Recently, the BAI had asked players to furnish details of their dues in order to crosscheck it and take stock of the funds available. But how long it will take for the players to get the money is difficult to tell.
