Call it apathy or plain oversight, but a goof-up in the visa application process almost grounded the Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Youth Games that begin in Isle of Man from Wednesday.

Almost all the players were on tender hooks till Tuesday afternoon as their initial visa applications were rejected because they applied for a wrong visa. While 19 of the 20 players scheduled to fly out in the wee hours of Wednesday got their visas Tuesday, cyclist Anjitha T P from Kerala would be cooling her heels for no mistake of hers.

17-year-old Anjitha was to compete in two events - women’s time trial and women’s road race - in the Youth Games. “We were first given forms for the visa which we submitted on 23rd August. On 25th we got to know that those were transit-visa forms and we had to fill forms for the regular visa. We submitted the forms again but by then it was too late,” Anjitha’s coach Chandran Chettiar told HT.

Officials of the Indian Boxing Federation and Badminton Association of India also confirmed that a miscommunication had created all problems.
