The Samajwadi Party's protest march Monday to Lucknow's Vidhan Bhavan - the heart of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly - was halted by police who cited a lack of permission. Samajwadi Party leader and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav sat in the middle of the road outisde his outfit's HQ and called the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of chief minister Yogi Adityanath 'anti-democracy (and) anti-Constitution'. "The government did not allow us to go to the legislature...the government did not allow us to participate in the condolence of an MLA (Arvind Giri of the BJP)," he told reporters. The Samajwadi Party's march comes ahead of the UP Assembly's monsoon session, which will likely be dominated by fierce opposition protests against inflation and unemployment in the state.
