  • On Sunday, November 27, the world's largest volcano erupted for the first time since 1984. The eruption of Mauna Loa, after nearly 40 years, left Hawaii with a crimson sky and ashes as people gathered to watch the breathtaking visuals. Vehicles could be seen driving down the Saddle Road as Mauna Loa erupted in the distance, leaving a breathtaking view of a rare historic event. "The eruption of Mauna Loa has migrated from the summit to the Northeast Rift Zone where fissures are feeding several lava flows," the USGS said adding that there was currently no threat to people living below the eruption zone, but warned that the volcano was volatile.(Marco Garcia / AP) expand-icon View Photos in a new improved layout

Recorded on July 15, 2022, satellite images of Hawaii's Mauna Loa showed rifts in the volcano. “Based on past events, the early stages of a Mauna Loa rift zone eruption can be very dynamic, and the location and advance of lava flows can change rapidly,” the USGS warned.(Maxar Technologies / REUTERS) expand-icon View Photos in a new improved layout

This file photo shows the Mauna Loa volcano in 1975, a few years before it erupted in 1984. “The flows are not threatening any downslope communities and all indications are that the eruption will remain in the Northeast Rift Zone. Volcanic gas and possibly fine ash and Pele's Hair may be carried downwind,” the USGS said.(USGS / REUTERS File) expand-icon View Photos in a new improved layout
