  • Supporters of Amritpal Singh, the chief of the radical Sikh organisation ‘Waris Punjab De’ staged a massive protest in Amritsar on Thursday against the arrest of one of his close aides. Thousands of supporters, many of whom were armed with swords and other weapons, had gathered at the police station in Ajnala, Amritsar, led by Amritpal Singh. They also smashed the police barricades. The police imposed restrictions on all roads leading to Ajnala in order to prevent Amritpal's supporters from congregating from all over Punjab. Yet, many supporters carrying kirpans and other traditional weapons managed to reach Ajnala. Earlier on Friday, a case was filed against Amritpal Singh and his supporters for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing a man affiliated with the Ajnala faction of the Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal.
