Wu Yanni of China, the other favourite to win gold in the race apart form Yarraji, had gotten off to a false start and Yarraji was among those who went off right after her. However both athletes ended up being shown the disqualification paddle. After lengthy discussions, both were allowed to compete and Wu had originally finished second.
