Despite getting an approval for the 68.80-km BRTS route in the city, the PMC has hardly been able to execute 16-km BRTS route on Ahmednagar and Alandi road.
After spending crores of rupees and taking it up on priority, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has put breaks on its Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project by not extending it in other areas.
Despite getting an approval for the 68.80-km BRTS route in the city, the PMC has hardly been able to execute 16-km BRTS route on Ahmednagar and Alandi road. The civic body has already completed 17-km of the BRTS network on Hadapsar-Swargate-Katraj road.
The municipal administration is also keeping mum on the extension of the BRTS project. Despite activists and public representatives raising the question several times about the extension of the BRTS, no officer has been willing to comment on it.
There were lot of controversies over the BRTS project. Even elected members are not willing to execute it in their areas. If the municipal administration announces any route, the elected members immediately start opposing it by considering the previous experience.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is considered as a strong supporter of BRTS as it has been executed effectively in Ahmedabad. The BJP announced that it would execute Ahmedabad like BRTS in Pune city, but no leader from the ruling party is taking an interest in the project.
