According to eye-witnesses, a second person, identified as Hiteshawar Chakate (31), a resident of Bhekrai nagar, Hadapsar, was standing at the PMPML bus stop, waiting for a bus, when the tree also fell on him, seriously damaging his neck.
Recently, a 57-year-old yoga teacher and former Doordarshan anchor, Kanchan Nath, lost her life after a tree fell on her in Chembur, Mumbai. Against that backdrop, the issue of trees that were a danger to passersby given the monsoon season, was taken up by residents in Pune, but the authorities have done nothing, it seems.
The Fire Department told HT that it got the alert in the afternoon and immediately rushed to the spot and cleared the tree. Rajaram Kedari, a fire official on the spot, confirmed that two persons were injured and hospitalised. Kedari said, “The tree was old and damaged due to termites. Termites covered almost 50 per cent of the tree. It was obvious that it was going to fall.”
