A week after murder, blood-stained T-shirt exposes crime of passion
25-year-old woman and paramour arrested for killing her brother-in-law in Jalandhar
There is no perfect crime. Proving this adage, Mehtapur police arrested Kiranjeet Kaur (25) and her paramour Rakesh Kumar (22) on Saturday, for the murder of Harvinder Singh (24), the brother-in-law of Kiranjeet, from Khurlapur village, 48 km from district headquarters.
The clue came from the victim’s blood-stained T-shirt found in the main accused Kiranjeet’s wardrobe, a week after the crime. Kiranjeet’s husband, the brother of Harvinder, works in Saudi Arabia and she had developed an affair with Kumar for a year now, that Harvinder threatened to expose.
Family thought he died of heart attack
The police said the accused had planned the crime minutely so that it would appear like an heart attack. A gullible family had cremated the body, assuming that it was indeed a heart attack. As part of the plan, Kaur mixed sleeping pills in Harvinder;s milk and her father-in-law Gurbachan Singh on Auguts 4 night, ensuring that fell unconscious. Taking advantage of this, Kiranjeet called Kumar to the house and both of them used a pillow to strangle Harvinder to death.
The police said during the murder, the blood came from Harvinder’s throat and they used a T-shirt to clear and later kept the T-shirt into the almirah in her room.
Accused took part in cremation
Police claim that Kiranjeet behaved like a shocked relative when the death was discovered the next day and calmly took part in the cremations. The family cremated the body on August 5 and even immersed the ashes at Kiratpur Sahib.
The victim’s father, Gurbachan Singh, however, informed the police after the family found a blood-stained T-shirt, some tablets and a cough syrup from Kiranjeet’s almirah and questioned following which she broke down and revealed the report.
A case under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing the disappearance of evidence of offence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC has been registered against Kiranjeet Kaur, Rakesh Kumar and his two elder brothers Lovepreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh on a complaint from Gurbachan Singh.
“We have arrested Kiranjeet and Rakesh and they will be taken on remand soon,” said Shahkot DSP Dilbagh Singh, claiming that even though the body had been cremated and there was no post-mortem report, the police file be able to file a strong case.
