Though the police department overlooked the bravery of a traffic head constable, who arrested a murder accused without any help, a social organisation recognised his courageous act and honoured him for it. Sham Singh, 46, said, he was exuberant about being honoured by NGO Action Against Corruption, but the department that he working for had ignored him.

Sham Singh, 46, said, he was exuberant about being honoured by NGO Action Against Corruption, but the department that he working for had ignored him. However, he would continue to serve the department with good spirit, he added.

Giving details about the incident, Singh said he was posted on Tajpur Road and was managing flow of traffic at 8.30 pm on January 1.

Meanwhile, a man came there and tried to board a bus. Finding his movement suspicious, Singh asked him to stop. “However, the man ignored me, following which I pounced on him and caught him. He then pushed me to the ground, confirming my doubt that something was amiss. So I got back up and caught him by the neck,” Singh claimed.

“The suspect fought back persistently to free himself, but I did not give up. Meanwhile, two cartridges fell from his pocket. I then shouted for help to nab the accused, but no one came forward. I managed to overpower the suspect and dialled the PCR number from my mobile with one hand,” he added.

After around 25 minutes, cops from Division Number 7 police station appeared there and he handed over the suspect to them.

Later, he came to know that the accused was Parminder Singh, who had gunned down a woman in Guru Arjan Dev Nagar a few minutes ago and was trying to escape to evade arrest.

Later, the police recovered a rifle and live cartridges that he had used in the crime.

Courage is nothing new to this native of Shahpur village of Dasuha, as he was the first cop to enter Khud Mohalla to initiate a rescue operation when a major fire broke out, killing three in 2003. He was then deputed in PCR motorcycle wing, and was appreciated for his bravery.

Chanderkant Chaddha, president of Action Against Corruption, said such officers should be honoured, adding that the organisation would meet the police chief for promotion to Singh.
