In a pointer to alleged nexus between drug mafia and politicians in Punjab, a former chief parliamentary secretary and former Shiromani Akali Dal MLA along with his wife and nephew have been booked for allegedly selling liquor without permission.
A case has been registered at Dhuri Sadar police station under Sections 61/1/14 of the Punjab Excise Act against five people, including ex-MLA from Dhuri, Surinder Singh, his wife Inderjit Kaur, his nephew Aman and Manpreet and Jaspreet Singh. The latter two were arrested with countrymade liquor.
Talking to the Hindustan Times, Dhuri Sadar station house officer Deepender Pal Singh confirmed that a first-information report (FIR) has been registered against five people for illegally selling liquor from their home. However, the police have arrested Manpreet and Jaspreet Singh, from whom 108 bottles of countrymade liquor were seized. After the registration of the FIR, the police have started investigation and are looking for Surinder, his wife and nephew, who are absconding.
When asked about the further course of action, the SHO said registration of FIR was enough to arrest them and now the police will start investigation to arrest all the accused.
Working on a tip-off regarding illegal sale of liquor in the region, ASI Pritpal Singh had put up a 'naka' near Dhaulpura bus stand, where Manpreet and Jaspreet were arrested with 108 bottles of illicit liquor.
During the interrogation, they revealed that they had purchased the liquor from the house of Surinder Singh. They also disclosed that his wife and nephew were also involved in the sale of illicit liquor, the SHO said, adding that both the accused have been taken into custody.
Surinder Singh remained CPS after being elected on a SAD ticket from Dhuri in 1985. However, after the denial of ticket in the last assembly elections in 2011, he left the party alleging that the Akali Dal was only giving tickets to kith and kin of leaders. Though he had quit politics, Surinder Singh is still considered an influential person in the region.
