According to officials in the meteorological department, heavy rain of 39.6 mm has been reported in the district by 4 pm on Saturday.

The rain, accompanied by winds, has also flattened the standing crop and this may affect the grain, which is in the initial stage of growth.

Rajender Singh Sohi, chief agriculture officer, here told Hindustan Times that continued rainfall for the last couple of days at this stage may affect the prospects of a bumper crop in the district.

"We have already sent teams to assess the loss by Monday. As most of the crop has flattened, it will increase the harvesting cost also as the flattened crop could not be harvested with combine harvesters," he added.

Officials in the agriculture department advised the farmers to pump out the water from the fields to protect their crop from waterlogging effects and attack of fungal diseases.

It is worth mentioning here that, following the favourable weather conditions this year, the district agriculture department had set a target of producing 14.74 lakh MTs of wheat in the district.

"Continued rain has caused a huge damage to the crop. It will also delay the ripening of the grain," said Gurcharn Singh, a farmer.
