A middleman, who had allegedly lured him on the pretext of finding a suitable match for him, neither informed the police nor did he inform the family of the deceased.

He along with his accomplices and the hotel manager allegedly disposed of the body in a canal by stuffing it in a bag.

The middleman had arranged Amanpal's meeting with several girls. As parents of the youth were separated, apprehending insecurity, girls refused to marry him. Feeling humiliated, the youth allegedly committed suicide.

The matter came to light five days ago when Ludhiana SSP (rural) Gurprit Singh Toor received a complaint through fax from Tajinder Singh of Canada, stating that his brother Amanpal Singh has been missing since January from the area of Jagraon.

He also told the SSP that in January when Amanpal last talked to him, he had told him that Kulwant Singh and Aman of Bassian village and their accomplice Karamjit Singh of Sukhana village were allegedly forcing him to marry a girl and they had taken his passport, money, return ticket and other documents. The police launched a manhunt to locate Amanpal.

Addressing a press conference in Jagraon, DIG (Ludhiana range) MF Farooqui said, the police nabbed the trio and interrogated them. They confessed to have disposed of Amanpal's body in January with the help of Gulshan Rai, owner of Kukki Hotel, where Amanpal was lodged in and allegedly committed suicide.

Rai said suicide in a hotel room would have defamed the name of his hotel and his business would have been affected, therefore they made a plan to dispose of the body.

The police have arrested all four accused and booked them under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 420 (forgery) and 201 (disposing of clues) of the IPC.

Kulwant Singh and Karamjit Kaur were the middlemen. They used to dupe people on the pretext of arranging their marriages abroad. Robin, another middleman, who is settled in Canada, has been also booked in the case.

The police will try to arrest him. Robin has connections with Kulwant Singh and Karamjit Kaur, said the DIG.

According to SSP Gurprit Singh Toor, the body of Amanpal is yet to be recovered. During the interrogation, the accused admitted that they used to share the booty that they got from duping the youths who wanted to settle abroad.
