"My husband sacrificed his life on duty. He was honest and dedicated to his job," Rajpal Kaur said at her residence in Guru Nanak Dev Colony.
The ASI, who was in charge of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar police post, was shot twice on May 18, 2011. He succumbed to his injuries at Dayanand Medical College (DMC) Hospital about a month later.
His brother, Hardev Singh, had taken voluntary retirement soon after the incident. He was also an ASI in the Ludhiana police.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Hardev Singh said he was informed about the arrest of the accused on Thursday morning by inspector general (IG), Patiala Range, Ishwar Singh.
"I know we cannot get him back, but we want to see the accused hanged for killing my brother," he said.
Bajwa's elder son Ruvneev Singh is pursuing BTech, while his younger son, Navdeep Singh, is a student of Class 10.
Meanwhile, additional director general of police (ADGP) Sidharth Chattopadhaya lauded the Patiala police for arresting the murder accused. During his tenure in Ludhiana as senior superintendent of police (SSP), Chattopadhaya was assisted by the ASI in many operations against terrorists. Chattopadhaya said Gurdial Singh was a brave and upright officer.
