In a new twist to the case of a newborn who was rescued from a canal near Sudhar village but died during treatment, CPM leader Santokh Gill has received a letter that the biological mother of the infant was a rape victim.

Police are now investigating the case on these lines and trying to verify the contents of the letter - written by an unknown person and sent through speed post - which Gill has since forwarded to Ludhiana (rural) SSP Ashish Choudhary.
The newborn was found in a small basket floating in a canal near Akalgarh bridge of Sudhar village on July 9. An NGO had later got the baby admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, where she had died of some respiratory problem on August 14.
The unidentified writer claimed in the letter that she had given birth to the premature baby on July 9 in a private hospital. The writer further claimed that her lover had ditched her after promising marriage, took the newborn and threw her in the canal and threatened to keep quiet over the issue.
The letter alleged that the youth hailed from village Rattuwal and had barged into her house in 2011 while she was alone. After forcing her to develop physical relations with him, he threatened her to keep quiet on the crime.
The letter's writer claimed that her lover and his accomplice raped her a few days later after offering her a cold drink laced with sedatives.
The writer said she become pregnant and told her lover but not her parents. He began to force her to abort but her health did not permit the medical procedure.
It was further said that she fainted on July 9, after which her parents took her to hospital where she gave birth to a premature baby girl.
After she was discharged from hospital, her lover came and snatched the newborn from her and warned her and her mother to leave. Later, the letter writer said, she came to know that he had thrown the infant in the canal.
The said girl claimed that she had kept quiet due to fear of social stigma but was feeling guilty after police began to probe the incident.
"I have forwards the letter to DSP Raikot, who is investigating the case, and asked him to verify the contents of the letter. It is a sensitive matter, and we will take action after the completion of the inquiry," SSP Ashish Choudhary said.
