Ludhiana ACP booked for taking bribe

The vigilance bureau has registered a corruption case against assistant commissioner of police (Gill) Gurcharan Singh for accepting Rs 25 lakh as bribe to favour a motor vehicle inspector (MVI), Rakesh Kumar Gupta, who is absconding and faces charges of corruption and possessing opium.

While sources in the VB said that vigilance sleuths had confined the ACP after registering a case against him in Mohali, top VB officials claimed that he was at large.

Gurcharan had joined the Ludhiana police commissionarate as ACP (Gill) on August 31. Earlier, he was posted as DSP (vigilance) in Ludhiana.

According to the FIR registered against Gurcharan, he had accepted Rs 25 lakh as bribe from Gupta when he was the DSP (vigilance) to settle a corruption case in the MVI's favour. Following a tip-off in this regard, the VB transferred Gurcharan from the department and initiated an investigation into the matter. After completing the inquiry, the VB found him guilty and booked him for corruption.

The economic offences wing of the VB in Ludhiana had raided Gupta's house in Ambedkar Nagar, Model Town Extension, here on July 18 and seized Rs 35 lakh in cash, 1 kg of opium, Indira Vikas Patra worth Rs 5 lakh and property documents worth several crores. But Gupta was not present in his house when the raid took place and managed to evade arrest.

The VB had lodged a case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was also booked by the Model Town police for possessing opium under the NDPS Act.

Subsequently, Gupta came in contact with Gurcharan and allegedly gave him Rs 25 lakh as bribe to settle the case in his favour.
