According to the FIR registered against Gurcharan, he had accepted Rs 25 lakh as bribe from Gupta when he was the DSP (vigilance) to settle a corruption case in the MVI's favour. Following a tip-off in this regard, the VB transferred Gurcharan from the department and initiated an investigation into the matter. After completing the inquiry, the VB found him guilty and booked him for corruption.

The economic offences wing of the VB in Ludhiana had raided Gupta's house in Ambedkar Nagar, Model Town Extension, here on July 18 and seized Rs 35 lakh in cash, 1 kg of opium, Indira Vikas Patra worth Rs 5 lakh and property documents worth several crores. But Gupta was not present in his house when the raid took place and managed to evade arrest.
