Waiting for June 7, when the Australian court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict in the case of murder of his daughter Manpreet Kaur against her husband Chamanjot Singh, who is facing the charges of manslaughter.

The family, however, is not satisfied with the charges of manslaughter against Chamanjot. They want him to be tried for murder instead. The defense argued that Chamanjot was provoked into the act as Manpreet was involved with someone else. Besides, the defense submitted, Chamanjot was stressed because of financial hardships and feared deportation.

Earlier, in an interview with a local Punjabi program, Manpreet’s sister Jaspreet Kaur, who is pursuing the case in Sydney, had express dissatisfaction over the defense allegations saying that Chamanjot had not backed the allegations with evidence.

Recounting the chain of events, Baldev told HT that Manpreet (28) went to Australia on a study visa in January 2009 and her husband Chamanjot (24) followed her in May the same year. On December 29, 2009 a heated argument between the couple turned fatal for Manpreet, as Chamanjot allegedly slit her throat with a box cutter.

Baldev Singh said Manpreet used to work part-time in Sydney to pay her fee. However, rather than earning, Chamanjot used to steal the money and send it to his parents in Ludhiana. On December 29, 2009, half hour before her death, Manpreet called up her father to tell him about Chamanjot’s wrongdoing.

He was on his way to Chamanjot’s parents in Shyam Nagar to seek their intervention when he got a call from his other daughter Jaspreet Kaur in Australia about Manpreet’s death. “It is a clear case of murder.

Chamanjot stabbed Manpreet eight times with a sharp-edged weapon. She was beaten brutally before the murder. I visited Australia in June last and remained there for around two months to pursue the case,” said Baldev Singh.

An inconsolable Baldev Singh said, “I will not spare the culprits. Chamanjot’s parents are also responsible for my daughter’s death, as they were pressuring her for money. I want to see all of them behind bars.”
