Faced with the task of assigning high security number plates to all old vehicles along with the new ones, the Ludhiana district transport office has decided to issue the new plates according to the number assigned and not as per the series.

Faced with a huge task of assigning high security number plates to all the old vehicles along with the new ones being registered, the district transport office (DTO) has come up with a novel policy. As per the self-devised policy, the DTO has decided to issue the new plates according to the number assigned and not as per the series.

So, at a time when the first 500 numbers of all the series will be accepted for two months beginning now, the rest will be called in batches of subsequent 500 numbers over the same period. And considering that we are talking about thousands of vehicles registered over the last 10-15 years, it won't be easy to calculate the time that it would take for the process to complete.

The DTO has fixed itself a time limit of six months to issue these high security number plates.

Reacting to the decision, Vijay of Haibowal area said as his vehicle number was in late thousands, he would have to wait for three years for the new number plates.

"The department should review the new policy. The DTO is already very lazy about issuing the high security number plates and we are afraid the wait for the new number plates could stretch longer," he said.

DTO SPEAK

District transport officer Manpreet Singh Chhatwal said the department has to issue number plates to all vehicles registered with it and these will be done according to the new pattern. "I have asked the contractor to speed up the work, as it is entrusted with issuing at least 62,500 number plates in all and to do this in one month is a tough job. The department will find a way out to accomplish the target," Chhatwal said.
