Deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Ratan Singh Brar and inspector Sandeep Wadheram, station house officer (SHO) of the NRI police station, are on the special investigation team (SIT) "We are studying the complaint from Parminder Jassal of Richmond, Canada, father of Kevin Jassal," said Ludhiana (rural) senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ashish Chaoudhary.

The family had not filed any complaint at the time of Kevin's death but now after five months, it wanted to pursue the matter, said the SSP. "The family was not even agreed for autopsy but as the matter was of mysterious death, police insisted on post-mortem examination and waiting for the chemical examination report," the SSP added.

In his complaint, Parminder Jassal has accused his brother and nephew of killing his son. Parminder Jassal told HT on telephone that he had a feud with one of his brothers over money. "My brother and nephew had threatened me but I had overlooked it. I was wrong," he said. "They gave poison to my son, and made it look as though he had taken drug overdose," he added.

Asked why the family had not filed a complaint at the time of death, Jassal said that because of Kevin's death, he had sunk into depression and failed to understand the situation. "As time passed, things came to the fore, indicating that Kevin's death was murder," he said. "One of Kevin's teeth had been broken. The killers might have done it to tamp the poison in his mouth," he said.

On February 25, the family was at Sawaddi Kalan in Ludhiana, and on March 14, Kevin was found dead in the vacant house of his uncle. Jassal even wrote to the chief minister, Punjab Human Rights Commission, Ludhiana police commissioner, and Canadian immigration and foreign affairs authorities.
