Interestingly, the police of Khanna, Ludhiana (rural) and Fatehgarh Sahib districts that fall under the DIG Ludhiana range are going to start the drive without possessing a single breath analyser.
However, DIG, Ludhiana range, MF Faruqui is looking forward to initiate the drive against tipsy drivers.
Instead of examining a person using a breath analyser, a cop would smell the person to know if he is drunk or not.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the DIG said the cops would smell the drivers to conclude whether he is drunk or not. Later, the driver would be taken to a hospital for further medical examination.
He added that the police had been trying to procure breath analysers.
A senior cop said the police could make a suspect undergo a blood test, ignoring the fact that the police cannot force anyone to get pierced and give a blood sample until the court orders the suspect to give a blood sample for medical examination.
Replying to a question in this regard, the DIG admitted that the police could not force anyone to get pierced, but he said that the government hospital authorities could take blood samples of a suspect, whether he is willing or not.
He said it was a long process, but effective things do take time to establish.
However, in contradiction to the DIG's statement, Dr Sarvesh Kaushal, medical officer at the civil hospital, Ludhiana, said, "The government medicos are not authorised to take blood samples without the consent of the suspect."
Police to take help of marriage palaces
DIG MF Faruqui said the police would take the help of marriage palaces to curb drunken driving.
The police would ask the marriage palace owners to put boards outside the palaces regarding hazards of drunken driving. He said people fond of drinking should avail the services of a driver.
