The decision was taken at a recent meeting to allot hostels to various departments. The south campus houses three prominent institutes — University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), dental sciences college and University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS) — while many more other departments are also being shifted from the main campus to the Sector-25 campus.

There are nearly 3,000 students studying on the south campus. It has three hostels — one for boys and two for girls — with a total capacity of 1,080 students.

The students from the south campus will be allotted hostel facility on the main campus only if the south campus hostels are full. “Students will not have to shuttle between the south campus and main campus, which will reduce traffic congestion. We will try to accommodate as many students as we can on south campus,” dean, students welfare, Navdeep Goyal said.

Goyal added that the students of these institutes currently living on the main campus were being shifted to the south campus, while those having departments on the main campus would be allotted hostels on the main campus itself.

For the newcomers, the allotment would be done on the basis of distance between their departments and hostels. The main campus has seven hostels each for boys and girls with a capacity of 5,600 students.

“The students who could not get hostels on the south campus would get the facility on the main campus. But they would be allotted hostels on the main campus only if the south campus hostels are filled to the capacity,” Goyal said.

The PU has recently decided that first-year hostellers in the university would not be allowed to keep cars to avoid congestion. Traffic congestion has become a major problem on the campus and a number of plans, including creation of new parking lots and road widening, are underway to improve mobility on the campus. The PU has also decided to appoint seven guards to manage traffic on the campus. The pilot project of double-laning of gate number-1 is also underway and officials hinted that it would be made a permanent feature.
