Punjab Police: swift to reprimand, slow to award

These officers, from across the state, have been nominated for the commendation disc by their superiors for extraordinary work. But, their files have been lying pending with the director general of police (DGP) office for at least over two years.
Commendation disc represents extraordinary work done by any police officer and the receiver wears it on his or her uniform with the name plate.
The cops rue that in case of any mistake the officers take no time to reprimand them, but their extraordinary work receives no appreciation.
Former DGP PS Gill had started giving commendation disc in 2011, soon after he took the reins of
Punjab Police. Some officers received the commendation disc from him, but later files of officers recommended for the award stopped moving.
According to these officers, the district police chiefs - commissioners in police commissionerate system and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) in police districts - recommend commendation disc and send the files to the DGP office. After considering the achievement, the DGP issues a certificate and commendation disc to the officer.
An inspector rank officer from Ludhiana police, said he had played a key role in solving several cases, including the DSP double murder case, the double murder case of a man and granddaughter, besides several others. His name, along with other officers, was recommended for the commendation disc in 2012, but he was yet to receive recognition.
Despite several attempts, DGP Sumedh Singh Saini could not be contacted for comment.
Highly placed sources said around 250 files from across the Punjab were lying pending with the office, waiting for the nod of the Punjab Police chief.
