As a result, Babla Cheema of Sekhewal village, son of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) district incharge Jaswant Singh Cheema, has been regularly getting follow up calls from the police to keep a tab on his movements, which he claims is sheer harassment.
Cheema claimed that the 'mix-up' was fallout of a head constable nursing a grudge against him, and as such, his name had been deliberately added to the list of drug peddlers with the intension of harassing him.
He has now filed a complaint in this context to the police commissioner, seeking action in the matter.
A property dealer, Cheema said he was shocked when he started getting phone calls from Basti Jodhewal police station regarding the 'cases' registered against him.
"Despite telling the cops several times that there is no case registered against me, they keep calling me, inquiring about my location," Cheema said.
"When I digged deeper to know the cause of the nuisance, I was stunned to find my name in the inventory of drug peddlers with recovery of heroin listed against my name," he added.
His father, Jaswant Singh Cheema, alleged that the police had been implicating innocent youths in fake cases to score brownie points.

Around a decade ago, police had prepared posters of dreaded gangster Rajiv Raja and his girlfriend, Neeru, for their arrest and pasted the posters in every nook and cranny of the city.
It later came to fore that the female's picture on the posters was in fact of an innocent Haibowal girl instead of Neeru. After putting her through much harassment, senior police officials personally apologised to the girl and settled down the matter.
