As the locals sounded the Division Number 3 police, they reached the scene and took custody of the child. Later, they booked an unidentified woman for deserting and leaving her newborn on the road. Search was on to find the mother of the baby, said police.
In the meantime, residents of Walia Colony informed the Meharban police that Reena of the same colony went out with her daughter a few hours back, returned alone. They suspected that Reena had either killed her daughter or sold her to somebody.
Following the complaint, the Meharban police swung into action, and grilled Reena, who purportedly confessed that she had deserted her daughter in front of the hospital, as she was unable to avail treatment for her.
Later, the Meharban police handed over the woman to the Division Number 3 police for further questioning, and sent her newborn to Talwandi Dham orphanage.
However, as the police arrested the woman, her eight-year-old son and another daughter were left alone at their home.
Reena told to police that she has a son and a daughter from her first husband Pankaj, who left them around eight years back. Following which, she started living with Ravi Kant in live-in relationship and sent her son to her parental house while her daughter remained with her, Reena told police, adding that she got pregnant from Ravi Kant, who left her too.
She gave birth to the girl child around 36 days ago, said Reena, adding that her daughter suffered a clot of flesh on her back and she was unable to avail treatment for her daughter, thus, she left the newborn in front of the hospital with hope that the hospital would start her treatment.
SHO at the Division Number 3 police station inspector Brij Mohan said the woman would be produced before the court on Sunday.
