The graduation final-year student of Jubilee College in Bhurkunda would be seen marching at the prestigious parade alongside other girls chosen from across the country by the national service scheme (NSS). She would represent the Vinobha Bhave University.
Her father Ashok Gope is a mason who ekes out a living by carrying out small-time repairing works and working at construction sites. Her mother Sahedri Devi also accompanies Gope occasionally at construction sites to supplement the family’s income.
A resident of Bhurkunda’s Gandhi Nagar locality, Sumanti cleared three rounds before she was selected for the college team. Later she was selected for the district and state teams of NSS before making her foray in the national NSS team.
“She is our future. We take immense pride in her achievement,” said Sumanti’s parents.
College principal Dr RK Das said Sumanti had made him and the college very proud.
“She is an inspiration to several students who always crib due to lack of resources and opportunity.”
“I am very happy to be selected for the parade. It is a great opportunity and honour,” said Sumanti attributing her success to NSS official Dr P Pandey for making her realise her dream.
Sumanti said she wanted to become a police officer in the future.
